Karls Rhue was the Thornhurst summer estate of the Stegmaier's, founders and owners of the Stegmaier
Brewing Company. The following was written about the Stegmaier Brewery in a business review in the late 1800's.
Their estate in Thornhurst was about 530 acres and was originally acquired by a Doctor who planned to develop it as a health
sanitarium because of its ideal location and good air. His plans, however, never materialized and eventually the area was
sold to the Stegmaiers as their exclusive estate. Surrounded by State Forest land the Bear Lake Association, its privacy was
guaranteed. Development of the area must have started early in the 1900's because the first entry in Mrs. Stegmaier's Garden
Book Jan. 1918, makes several references to a well developed estate including greenhouse, barn, and other buildings.
